1. A computer that is a gateway between two networks at OSI layer 3 and that relays and directs data packets through that inter-network. The most common form of router operates on IP packets.
2. On a network, a device that determines the best path for forwarding a data packet toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks, and is located at the gateway where one network meets another.
