An incident where United States military, Department of Defense civilians, or Department of Defense contractor personnel authorized to accompany the Armed Forces of the United States (or others designated by the President or Secretary of Defense) become separated from their unit (as an individual or a group) while participating in a United States-sponsored activity or mission and are in a situation where they must survive, evade, resist, or escape.
