Merox
Term · Energy · MLC-T-ENE-001304
Also known as kerosene Merox or LPG Merox. The Merox unit is a proprietary technology owned by the Universal Oil Products (UOP) Company, now Honeywell UOP. It selectively sweetens petroleum products by oxidizing the foul-smelling mercaptans into the sweeter disulfides that remain in the product, leaving the total sulfur content the same. The process is currently less expensive to install than a hydrotreater, which actually lowers the sulfur content. In the Merox process, mercaptans are oxidized by means of a catalyst in an alkaline environment.
