Algal Blooms

1. Sudden spurts of algal growth, which can affect water quality adversely and indicate potentially hazardous changes in local water chemistry.
2. A rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae (typically microscopic) in a water system. Algal blooms may occur in freshwater as well as marine environments.
