Atmospheric Transformation (secondary formation)

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-002351

The process by which chemicals are transformed into other chemicals in the air (atmosphere). When a chemical is transformed the original pollutant no longer exists; it is replaced by one or more new chemicals. Compared to the original chemical, the transformed chemical(s) can have more, less or the same toxicity. In AirToxScreen, we use both “atmospheric transformation” and “secondary formation;” they mean the same thing.
