Criteria air pollutant

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-006903

  1. One of six common air pollutants determined to be hazardous to human health and regulated under EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The six criteria air pollutants are carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. The term "criteria pollutants" derives from the requirement that EPA must describe the characteristics and potential health and welfare effects of these pollutants. It is on the basis of these criteria that standards are set or revised.

  2. 1. A group of very common air pollutants regulated by EPA on the basis of criteria (information on health and/or environmental effects of air pollution). Criteria air pollutants are widely distributed all over the country.

    2. Substances for which EPA has set health-based standards. There are six "criteria pollutants" of air quality: ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and lead. Five of the six criteria air pollutants are included in EPA's emissions inventory: carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), and lead (Pb). Lead is also a hazardous air pollutant (HAP).

    3. These pollutants are particulate matter, photochemical oxidants (including ozone), carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and lead. EPA calls these pollutants "criteria" air pollutants because it sets NAAQS for them based on the criteria, which are characterizations of the latest scientific information regarding their effects on health or welfare.
