Potentially Responsible Parties
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-021762
1. Any individual or company--including owners, operators, transporters or generators--potentially responsible for, or contributing to a spill or other contamination at a Superfund site. Whenever possible, through administrative and legal actions, EPA requires PRPs to clean up hazardous sites they have contaminated.
2. Any individual or company potentially responsible for, or contributing to, contamination at a Superfund site.
3. Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs) are individuals, companies, or any other party that are potentially liable for payment of Superfund cleanup costs.
4. See http://www.epa.gov/compliance/cleanup/superfund/find.html. The Superfund law (CERCLA) allows EPA to respond to releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Under CERCLA, potentially responsible parties (PRPs) are expected to conduct or pay for the cleanup. The Superfund enforcement program identifies the PRPs at the site; negotiates with PRPs to do the cleanup; and recovers from PRPs the costs spent by EPA at Superfund cleanups.
