The Mars Climate Orbiter, a NASA weather and climate orbiter launched in December 1998 and lost on 23 September 1999 as it reached Mars. Ground software gave thruster impulse in pound-force seconds while the navigation team expected newton seconds, so the craft passed about 57 km above the surface instead of the planned 150 km or so and probably burned up in the atmosphere.
