Collateral

Assets pledged by a borrower to a lender to secure a loan or other obligation. In insurance, collateral may be required from an insured or reinsured to guarantee payment of deductibles, self-insured retentions, or reinsurance recoverables. Common forms include letters of credit, cash, or marketable securities, providing financial assurance to the obligee.
