Estoppel
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001352
A legal principle that prevents a party from asserting a claim or right that contradicts its previous actions or statements, especially when another party has reasonably relied on those actions or statements to their detriment. In insurance, if an insurer's representative makes a statement that leads an insured to believe coverage exists, the insurer may be estopped from denying coverage later. This doctrine aims to prevent injustice.
