An agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security tasked with coordinating the response to disasters that overwhelm the resources of local and state authorities. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides disaster assistance to individuals, businesses, and communities. It also manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which offers flood insurance to property owners in participating communities that adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances.
