Special investigative unit (SIU)

A dedicated team within an insurance company responsible for detecting, investigating, and deterring fraudulent activity by policyholders, claimants, or providers. The special investigative unit (SIU) is composed of trained investigators, analysts, and legal experts who examine suspicious claims that have been flagged by adjusters or computer algorithms. Many states have laws that mandate the establishment and maintenance of an SIU by insurers as a condition of being licensed to operate.
