Air pollution episode
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003383
A period during which the concentration of atmospheric pollutants in a specific area reaches levels that are considered harmful to public health or the environment. These events are characterized by the buildup of contaminants like ozone, particulate matter, or sulfur dioxide, which are trapped by stable atmospheric conditions such as a temperature inversion. An episode is formally declared when pollutant concentrations exceed specific thresholds defined by air quality standards, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 151, which indicates unhealthy conditions.
