Anvil cloud
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003575
A cumulonimbus cloud that has reached the tropopause, causing its top to spread out horizontally into a characteristic flat, anvil-like shape. This spreading occurs because the air parcel loses buoyancy upon encountering the stable stratification of the stratosphere. The anvil often extends downwind from the main storm cell, composed primarily of ice crystals.
