A set of access control technologies for restricting the use, modification, and distribution of copyrighted digital media. Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems are implemented by embedding code within a digital file that limits how a user can interact with it, such as preventing copying or limiting the number of devices on which it can be played. The technology is specified in standards like the Marlin DRM framework, which is jointly developed by multiple electronics and content companies.
