A rewritable optical disc format that allows data to be written, erased, and rewritten multiple times, similar to a hard drive. It offers random access to data and has a high degree of data integrity due to its defect management system. While technically superior for data storage, it gained less market share than DVD-RW and DVD+RW due to compatibility issues with some DVD players.
