The Hierarchical File System is a proprietary file system developed by Apple Inc. for organizing files on Macintosh computers. It uses a hierarchical directory structure, allowing files to be stored within folders, which can in turn contain other folders. HFS was superseded by HFS Plus (HFS+) for modern macOS systems.
