Root directory

The top-most directory in a hierarchical file system, from which all other directories and files branch out. It serves as the starting point for navigating the entire file system structure. On Unix-like systems, it is denoted by a single forward slash '/'; on Windows, each drive has its own root directory, such as 'C:\'.
