An idea, behavior, image, or style that spreads virally from person to person within a culture via the internet. An internet meme may take the form of an image macro, a video clip, a GIF, or a catchphrase that is modified and shared across social media platforms and forums. The term was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book 'The Selfish Gene' to describe cultural transmission.
