WAIS

A Wide Area Information Server, an early distributed information retrieval system that allowed users to search indexed databases over the internet. It enabled full-text searches of documents across multiple servers. WAIS was a precursor to modern web search engines, providing a way to find specific content before the widespread adoption of the World Wide Web.
