random number generator (RNG)

Term · Cybersecurity · MLC-T-CYB-003424

1. A process that generates a random sequence of values (usually a sequence of bits) or an individual random value. Uses one or more non-deterministic bit sources and a processing function that formats the bits, and outputs an unpredictable and uniformly distributed sequence of values. Note: An RNG is also considered a randomizer.

2. A mechanism that purports to generate truly random data.

3. A process used to generate an unpredictable series of numbers. Also called a Random bit generator (RBG).
