sanitization
Term · Cybersecurity · MLC-T-CYB-003692
1. Actions taken to render data written on media unrecoverable by ordinary and - for some forms of sanitization - extraordinary means.
2. A process to remove information from media such that data recovery is not possible, including the removal of all classified labels, markings, and activity logs.
3. A process or method to sanitize.
4. To render access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.
5. Actions taken to render data written on media unrecoverable by both ordinary and, for some forms of sanitization, extraordinary means. Process to remove information from media such that data recovery is not possible.
6. Process to remove information from media such that information recovery is not possible. It includes removing all labels, markings, and activity logs.
7. The removal of extraneous or potentially harmful data (e.g., malware) within a file or other information container (e.g., network protocol packet).
8. The removal of information from the storage device such that data recovery using any known technique or analysis is prevented. Sanitization includes the removal of data from the storage device, as well as the removal of all labels, markings, and activity logs. The method of sanitization varies depending upon the storage device in question, and may include degaussing, incineration, shredding, grinding, embossing, etc.
9. See sanitize.
10. Actions taken to render data written on media unrecoverable by both ordinary and, for some forms of sanitization, extraordinary means.
11. A process to render access to Target Data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort. Clear, Purge, and Destroy are actions that can be taken to sanitize media.
12. Process to remove information from media such that data recovery is not possible. It includes removing all classified labels, markings, and activity logs.
13. Actions taken to render data written on media unrecoverable by both ordinary and, for some forms of sanitization, extraordinary means.
Process to remove information from media such that data recovery is not possible. It includes removing all classified labels, markings, and activity logs.
14. Process to remove information from media such that data recovery is not possible.
