FIPS class code

A two-character code to differentiate between various classes of populated places, other geopolitical and census units, and institutional facilities. The class code structure distinguishes between active, inactive and nonfunctioning local governments, and also identifies close relationships between entities. For example, an incorporated place may serve as the statistical equivalent of a county.
Class codes exist for counties; county subdivisions; subminor civil divisions; places; consolidated cities; Alaska Native Regional Corporations; American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian areas; and American Indian tribal subdivisions.
