Harmonized system

Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-000853

  1. A six-digit international classification system which classifies traded goods based on physical characteristics.

Note: The classification system is used for customs purposes, such as taxes (tariffs), and collecting data for government statistics.

  2. The International Harmonized System (HS) is administered by the World Customs Organization. The 4- and 6-digit HS headings and subheadings are the basis for the 10-digit U.S. import and export statistical classification systems, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States Annotated (HTS) for imports, and the Schedule B for exports. The HS is revised approximately every five years. The current version was updated in 2007; the next revision is scheduled for 2012. For more information, see The World Customs Organization.

In the United States, the import classification system is called the "Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States" while the export system is called the "Schedule B."
