"definition": "Room additions and renovationsIn the American Housing Survey, the question associated with bathroom/kitchen renovations asks if the homeowner renovated or altered the room by changing its structure (that is moving/adding/removing walls). This would capture bathrooms that were built out into existing closet space, etc. or anything else that involved changing the structure of the existing room.\n\nA remodel, on the other hand, is defined as a job that made substantial changes to the room (a job bigger than changing wallpaper and smaller than tearing down walls). So that might mean changing the layout of the kitchen/bathroom, but tearing down or adding walls would not be part of the job. Excludes decorating work, such as, painting, wallpapering, mirrors, curtains and other furnishings.",
