Tribal block group

Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-001984

  1. A subdivision of a tribal census tract, a tribal block group is the smallest geographic unit for which the Census Bureau tabulates sample data on American Indian Reservations and/or off-reservation trust lands. Tribal BGs are delineated by American Indian tribal participants or the Census Bureau, independently of the standard county-based census tracts and block groups.

For Census 2000, a tribal BG consists of all the census blocks within a tribal census tract with the same beginning number and are dependent on the county-based block groups for delineation. Example: Tribal BG 3 within a tribal census tract consists of all blocks numbered from 3000 to 3999. In situations where an American Indian reservation or trust land crosses county or state lines, the same tribal BG number (within a tribal census tract) may be assigned on both sides of the county/state line.

For the 2010 Census, tribal block groups were delineated independently of the county-based block groups and use a letter range A through K (except "I" which could be confused with a number "1") to identify and code the tribal block group. This was done to better identify and differentiate tribal block groups from county-based block groups.
