Tribal Census Tract

Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-001986

A small, relatively permanent statistical subdivision of a federally recognized American Indian reservation and/or off-reservation trust land, delineated by American Indian tribal participants or the Census Bureau for the purpose of presenting data. Tribal census tracts are defined independently of the standard county-based census tracts, and consist only of territory located on a reservation/trust land. The boundaries of tribal census tracts may cross state and/or county lines, and normally follow visible features, but may follow governmental unit boundaries and other nonvisible features in some instances.

For Census 2000, the Census Bureau delineated the tribal census tracts based on the county-based census tracts and reserved the numbers 9400 to 9499 for tribal census tracts, but not all tribal census tracts used this range.

For the 2010 Census, the tribal census tracts were defined independently of the standard county-based census tracts and have numbers that are six characters long leading with a "T" alphabetic character followed by five numeric codes having an implied decimal between the fourth and fifth character; for example, T01000, which translates as tribal census tract 10.
