Aftertreatment

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-000706

1. Passage of exhaust gases through a device or system such as a catalyst whose purpose is to chemically alter the gases prior to their release to the atmosphere.

2. Relating to a catalytic converter, particulate filter, or any other system, component, or technology mounted downstream of the exhaust valve (or exhaust port) whose design function is to decrease emissions in the engine exhaust before it is exhausted to the environment. Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) and turbochargers are not aftertreatment. [40 CFR 1036.801 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 1039.801 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 1042.901 (CFR 2013)]

3. Relating to a catalytic converter, particulate filter, thermal reactor, or any other system, component, or technology mounted downstream of the exhaust valve (or exhaust port) whose design function is to decrease emissions in the engine exhaust before it is exhausted to the environment. Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR), turbochargers, and oxygen sensors are not aftertreatment. [40 CFR 1054.801 (CFR 2013)] [40 CFR 1045.801 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 1048.801 (CFR 2013)]

4. Relating to a catalytic converter, particulate filter, or any other system, component, or technology mounted downstream of the exhaust valve (or exhaust port) whose design function is to reduce emissions in the locomotive exhaust before it is exhausted to the environment. Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) is not aftertreatment.

5. Relating to a catalytic converter, particulate filter, or any other system, component, or technology mounted downstream of the exhaust valve (or exhaust port) whose design function is to reduce emissions in the engine exhaust before it is exhausted to the environment. Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) is not aftertreatment.
