American Standard Code for Information Interchange

1. A binary code representing each letter, number, or other symbol with a unique 7-bit code. See also CODE (1).
2. A standard text file format that contains alphanumeric characters.
3. Pronounced ask-ee, ASCII is a code for representing English characters as numbers, with each letter assigned a number from 0 to 127. Most computers use ASCII codes to represent text, which makes it possible to transfer data from one computer to another.
