Ammonia

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001300

  1. 1. An inorganic nitrogen compound. In water, ammonia levels in excess of the recommended limits may harm aquatic life.

    2. One of the most abundant nitrogen-containing compounds in the atmosphere. It is an irritant with a characteristic pungent odor, which is widely used in industry. It is used in fertilizers to serve as a source of nitrogen for plants.

    3. A pungent colorless gaseous alkaline compound of nitrogen and hydrogen NH3 that is very soluble in water and can easily be condensed to a liquid by cold and pressure.

    4. A compound of nitrogen and hydrogen (NH3) that is a common by-product of animal waste. Ammonia readily converts to nitrate in soils and streams.

    5. A colorless, pungent, gas (NH3) that is extremely soluble in water, may be used as a refrigerant; a fixed nitrogen form suitable as fertilizer.

    6. Ammonia occurs naturally in water in trace amounts, but too much ammonia from fertilizers, sewage and other wastes can be poisonous to fish, especially when water temperature and pH are high. Ammonia can also cause heavy plant growth, foul odors, and low oxygen levels that can interfere with use for fishing, swimming and water supplies. Ammonia acts as a form of nitrogen in the environment, and too much can lead to nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) pollution.

  2. (as Nitrogen) 1. Ammonia measured as nitrogen.

    2. Ammonia reported as nitrogen. P4.

    3. Ammonia reported as nitrogen.
