Anaerobic digestion

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001360

1. The degradation of organic matter including manure brought about through the action of microorganisms in the absence of elemental oxygen.

2. The complex process by which organic matter is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria. The decomposition process produces a gaseous byproduct often called "biogas" primarily composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide.

3. Biochemical decomposition of organic matter in sewage sludge into methane gas and carbon dioxide by microorganisms in the absence of air.

4. Degradation of organic matter by microbes that produces a gas comprised mostly of methane and carbon dioxide, usually under wet conditions, in the absence of oxygen.

5. The degradation of organic matter including manure AD brought about through the action of microorganisms in the absence of elemental oxygen.
