Animal Phenotype
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001615
1. The observable structural and functional characteristics of an animal that result from the interaction of the genotype with the environment; the outward appearance of the animal.
2. Characteristics of an organism that rely on translation of genetic information into proteins. An-tibiotic resistance patterns and carbon source utilization patterns represent phenotypes, as they are mediated by enzymes and other proteins.
3. The observable physical and/or biochemical characteristics of the expression of a gene; the clinical presentation of an individual with a particular genotype.
4. A phenotype is an individual's observable traits, such as height, eye color, and blood type. The genetic contribution to the phenotype is called the genotype. Some traits are largely determined by the genotype, while other traits are largely determined by environmental factors.
5. Observable characteristics of an organism produced by the organism's genotype interacting with the environment.
