Barrier Island Habitat

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-002750

A barrier island is defined as a piece of land, usually elongated and somewhat parallel to the mainland shoreline, which is separated from the mainland by a body of water open to the ocean, and which has a non-marsh dry interface (such as sand or rock) with the ocean. Barrier islands bear the brunt of coastal storms, providing important protection to mainland shorelines. They are in a constant state of flux, moving due to sand deposited by storms and wave action.
