Batch Process
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-002863
1. A treatment process in which a tank or reactor is filled, the water is treated or a chemical solution is prepared, and the tank is emptied. The tank may then be filled and the process repeated.
2. Process in which the equipment is fed intermittently or discontinuously. Processing then occurs in this equipment after which the equipment is generally emptied. Examples of industries that use batch processes include pharmaceutical production and pesticide production.[40 CFR 63.1020 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 65.2 (CFR 2013)]
3. Process where the reactor(s) is operated in a batch mode.
4. Noncontinuous operation involving intermittent or discontinuous feed into equipment, and, in general, involves the emptying of the equipment after the batch operation ceases and prior to beginning a new operation. Addition of raw material and withdrawal of product do not occur simultaneously in a batch operation. [40 CFR 98.128 (CFR 2013)]
5. Unit operation where one cycle of feedstock preparation, cooking, fermentation, and distillation is completed before the next cycle is started (see batch distillation and batch fermentation).
6. For the purposes of this subpart, a process where the reactor(s) is operated in a batch mode.
7. Discontinuous process involving the bulk movement of material through sequential manufacturing steps. Mass, temperature, concentration, and other properties of a system vary with time. Addition of raw material and withdrawal of product do not typically occur simultaneously in a batch process.
