1. The variety of life in all forms, levels and combinations, including ecosystem diversity, species diversity and genetic diversity.
2. The variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur. Though it most often refers to the numbers of species, the term can apply to levels of organization ranging from genes to ecosystems.
