Brownfields Act of 2002

The Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act (H.R. 2869) (Brownfields Act of 2002) was signed by the President on January 11, 2002. The intent of the act is "to provide certain relief for small businesses from liability under the Comprehension Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980, and to amend such Act to promote the cleanup and reuse of brownfields, to provide financial assistance for brownfields revitalization, to enhance State response programs, and for other purposes." Under the law, the purchase of environmental insurance is an eligible activity for grantees.
