Cambium

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-004021

1. Layer of living cells between the wood and the innermost bark of a tree. Each growing season the cambium adds a new layer of cells (by cell division) on the wood already formed, as well as a layer or inner bark on the cambium's outer face.

2. A layer of living cells between the bark and hardwood that each year produces additional wood and bark cells, forming concentric growth rings.

3. The layer of reproducing cells between the inner bark (phloem) and the wood (xylem) of a tree that repeatedly subdivides to form new wood and bark cells.
