Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-004847
Historians aren't sure of the true meaning of the name Chesapeake, but believe it is derived from the Algonquian word Chesepiooc. People once believed this word meant "great shellfish bay," but in 2005, Algonquian linguist Blair Rudes stated it more likely means something like "great water," or that it may have referred to a village at the Bay's mouth.
