Competition

1. A policy and procedure in which individuals or organizations submit application(s) in response to an announcement by the EPA that funding is available for a particular project or type of project. The Agency provides the competitors with access to the same information and evaluates the competing applications against disclosed evaluation criteria. The goal of the process is to determine which of the competitors will carry out the project most effectively and to award a grant or cooperative agreement to a responsible applicant.

2. An interaction between members of two or more species that, as a consequence either of exploitation of a shared resource or of interference related to that resource, has a negative effect on fitness-related characteristics of at least one of the species.

3. An interaction between members of two or more species that, as a consequence either of exploitation of a shared resource or of interference related to that resource, has a negative effect on fitness-related characteristics of at least one of the species (Wiens 1989b:7-8).
