Conventional Pollutants
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-006586
1. As specified under the Clean Water Act, conventional contaminants include suspended solids, coliform bacteria, high biochemical oxygen demand, pH, and oil and grease.
2. Statutorily listed pollutants understood well by scientists. These may be in the form of organic waste, sediment, acid, bacteria, viruses, nutrients, oil and grease, or heat.
3. Pollutants typical of municipal sewage, and for which municipal secondary treatment plants are typically designed. EPA has, pursuant to section 304(a) of the CWA, identified 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), fecal coliform bacteria, oil and grease, and pH as conventional pollutants.
4. Pollutants typical of municipal sewage, and for which publicly owned treatment works typically are designed to remove; defined by Federal Regulation (§ 401.16) as BOD, TSS, fecal coliform bacteria, oil and grease, and pH.
5. Pollutant grouping that includes biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), oil & grease, total suspended solids (TSS), fecal coliform, and pH.
