Secondary treatment
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-025035
1. The second step taken by a Publicly Owned Treatment Works in which bacteria consume the organic parts of the waste. This treatment usually removes about 90% of all solids and oxygen-demanding substances.
2. The second step in most publicly owned waste treatment systems, in which bacteria consume the organic parts of the waste. It is accomplished by bringing together waste, bacteria, and oxygen in trickling filters or in the activated sludge process. This treatment removes floating and settleable solids and about 90 percent of the oxygen-demanding substances and suspended solids. Disinfection is the final stage of secondary treatment. (See Primary treatment, Tertiary treatment.)
3. Technology-based requirements for direct discharging municipal sewage treatment facilities. Standard is based on a combination of physical and biological processes typical for the treatment of pollutants in municipal sewage. Standards are expressed as a minimum level of effluent quality in terms of BOD 5 , suspended solids (SS), and pH (except as provided for special considerations and treatment equivalent to secondary treatment).
5. Technology-based requirements for direct discharging POTWs. Standard is based on the expected performance of a combination of physical and biological processes typical for the treatment of pollutants in municipal sewage. Standards are expressed as a minimum level of effluent quality in terms of: BOD5, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH (except as provided by treatment equivalent to secondary treatment and other special considerations).
