1. Causes are instances of the action of scientific laws in relevant circumstances. That is, a causal explanation consists of deduction from one or more laws and one or more facts concerning relevant conditions. Synonyms include the deductive-nomological model and the inductive-statistical model (for deterministic and probabilistic laws, respectively) as well as Hempel's model, the Hempel-Oppenheim model and the Popper-Hempel model.
