Current

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007111

1. The segment of a stream, river, or other waterbody that moves with a velocity much greater than the average of the rest of the water.

2. A movement or flow of electricity. Water flowing in a pipe is measured in gallons per second past a certain point, not by the number of water molecules going past a point. Electric current is measured by the number of coulombs per second flowing past a certain point in a conductor. A coulomb is equal to about 6.25 x 1018 electrons (6,250,000,000,000,000,000 electrons). A flow of one coulomb per second is called one ampere, the unit of the rate of flow of current.

3. The horizontal movement patterns in bodies of water; in coastal areas, currents are influenced by a combination of tidal (flood and ebb) and nontidal (wind-driven, river flow) forces.
