Dechlorination
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007418
1. Removal of chlorine and chemical replacement with hydrogen or hydroxide ions to detoxify a substance.
2. (dee-KLOR-uh-NAY-shun) The deliberate removal of chlorine from water. The partial or complete reduction of residual chlorine by any chemical or physical process.
3. The process of removing chlorine atoms from a PCB molecule while leaving the main molecular structure intact. In the Hudson, this only affects the outer chlorine atoms. In most instances, dechlorination of a PCB molecule simply yields a different PCB molecule.
4. Removal of chlorine from a substance.
5. The deliberate removal of chlorine from water. The partial or complete reduction of residual chlorine by any chemical or physical process.
6. The process of removing residual chlorine from disinfected wastewater prior to discharge into the environment. Sulfur dioxide is most commonly used. Not to be confused with degradation of chlorinated organics.
