Diatomaceous earth

1. A fine, siliceous (made of silica) "earth" composed mainly of the skeletal remains of diatoms, a type of free-floating, microscopic plant found in the ocean.
2. A chalk-like material (fossilized diatoms) used to filter out solid waste in wastewater treatment plants; also used as an active ingredient in some powdered pesticides.
