Diesel Particulate Matter

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007924

1. A component of diesel exhaust, including soot particles made up of carbon, ash, sulfates and other components that cause pollution and are a known carcinogen.

2. A mixture of particles that is a component of diesel exhaust. EPA lists diesel exhaust as a mobile-source air toxic due to the cancer and non-cancer health effects associated with exposure to whole diesel exhaust. Diesel PM (expressed as grams diesel PM/m3) has historically been used as a surrogate measure of exposure for whole diesel exhaust. Although uncertainty exists as to whether diesel PM is the most appropriate parameter to correlate with human health effects, it is considered a reasonable choice until more definitive information about the mechanisms of toxicity or mode(s) of action of diesel exhaust becomes available.

3. A mixture of particles that is part of diesel exhaust. EPA lists diesel exhaust as a mobile-source air toxic due to the health effects linked exposure to whole diesel exhaust.

4. The environmental burden indicator for diesel PM measures how much diesel PM (a mixture of particles from diesel exhaust) people might be exposed to in terms of micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). EJScreen presents diesel PM concentrations using percentile rank, ranging from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).

5. For more details on the diesel PM indicator, including why it is important and what you can do moving forward, please visit the EJScreen Indicator Overview for Diesel PM (https://www.epa.gov/ejscreen/ejscreen-indicator-overviews-diesel-particulate-matter)
