Digital Object Identifier

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007963

An alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency to uniquely identify a digital object, such as a dataset. A DOI is tied to a metadata description of the dataset as well as to a digital location, such as a URL, where all the details about the dataset are accessible. In the same way that publishers assign DOIs for electronic journal articles, the same can be done for datasets. DOIs are usually presented in two formats: (1) doi:10.xxxx/xxx - this is the format used in citations; (2) doi.org/10.xxxx/xxx - this is the DOI presented as a persistent URL. The website dx.doi.org can be used to find the html landing page for any DOI by simply typing (or pasting) the DOI into a text box and clicking on "Go." ORD is able to assign DOIs for the datasets published through ScienceHub by using the Interagency Data ID Web Service (IAD) (https://www.osti.gov/iad2/), provided by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) (https://www.osti.gov) of the Department of Energy (DOE), which is a member of DataCite (https://www.datacite.org), a nonprofit organization that provides DOIs for research data.
