1. The policies and procedures used by an organization to ensure that its documents and their revisions are proposed, reviewed, approved for release, inventoried, distributed, archived, stored, and retrieved in accordance with the organization's specifications.

2. A systematic procedure for indexing documents by number, date, and revision number for archiving, storage, and retrieval. Document control procedures ensure: (1) Documents are approved for adequacy prior to issue; (2) Documents are reviewed and updated as necessary; (3) Changes and the current revision status of documents are identified; (4) Relevant versions of applicable documents are available at points of use; (5) Documents remain legible and readily identifiable; (6) Externally generated documents necessary for the planning and operation of the management system are identified and properly controlled; and (7) The use of obsolete documents is prevented.
