Enrichment

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-009677

1. The addition of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon compounds or other nutrients into a lake or other waterway that greatly increases the growth potential for algae and other aquatic plants. Most frequently, enrichment results from the inflow of sewage effluent or from agricultural runoff.

2. The addition of nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon compounds) from sewage effluent or agricultural runoff to surface water, greatly increases the growth potential for algae and other aquatic plants.

3. Phenomenon associated with heterogeneous nucleation where partitioning of vapor phase compounds, such as metals, nucleate as particles or on very small particles.
