Excess spoil

1. Overburden material that is disposed of in a location other than the mine pit.

2. Spoil in excess of that necessary to backfill and grade affected areas to the approximate original contour. The term may include box-cut spoil where it has been demonstrated for the duration of the mining operation, that the box-cut spoil is not needed to restore the approximate original contour.
